Henri suggested I take a look at Christian Marclay's "The Clock" as an example of how small snippets of a film can convey a strong theme and narrative potential. Marclay's film is a 24-hour documentation of times in many different films, each extract corresponding to the time it is shown in real life. I was also reminded of one of Noam Toran's projects, "Proposition for an Impossible Library", which collects cinematic moments when characters die and catalogues them into categories, showing them in a feature-length video.
