Film tests

ibslaughton4

The aim of these tests was to 1) document a narrative in the background and 2) bring more focus to the object, which is framed as a MacGuffin by the presence of a suitable narrative.

Headphones test:

I thought this test was relatively successful, and I like the simple colour scheme and how our attention is always on the MacGuffin (the headphones) in the foreground. This test literally makes the narrative take place in the background. However, I was unable to focus my phone camera on the headphones due to autofocus. I think this takes the focus away from the foreground and onto the background, which was not what I was intending. To improve, I should try and either find an app that disables autofocus or try and borrow a better camera from someone else.

The way I shot this film from inside a bag reminded me of my 'Buckety Bucket' project. It's an interesting perspective that as people we don't often experience: the perspective of an object.

Shopping bag test:

I used this test to see how little I could use visuals to communicate a narrative. In this case, audio was used instead. Communicating the narrative in this way was successful in my opinion, and does visually bring the shopping bag into focus. However, the blue jeans contrast a lot with the brick background, distracting out focus from the bag. To improve, I could wear more neutral jeans, and potentially have the shopping bag in shot for a longer time.

Below, I have inserted "The Last One" test, responding to feedback about trusting the viewer more to focus on the red tomato. I have removed the slow pan in to make it less forceful. I also included more footage of the hands than before to improve on my own observation that I think I should spend longer building up the character of the hands.
