"Important"

Taking influence from the letters of transit from Casablanca, and from the mysterious briefcase from Pulp Fiction, this test uses the perspective of the MacGuffin itself to explore its identity. This test focuses on the importance of the letter, although never mentions why, letting the important nature of the MacGuffin define it. I try to pin a particular tone of voice to this MacGuffin, which may vary for different MacGuffins, through its tone of voice - making it sound seductive and egotistical. I also explore other themes including the desirability of MacGuffins.

It reads:

IMPORTANT DOCUMENT

NOT TO BE DISCLOSED

Monday 30th March 2020

This concerns you. And everybody else, for that matter.

I am Important. You hold me in your hands, you read me, you need me, you want me. Once you put me down, you will instantly pursue your next touch of me, because I can give you what you want. I set you on a path of desire. Even those who have not had me in their possession, or even those who are unaware of my powers, go after me. I am sought after, even if you know nothing about me. Because I am Important.

But too often, my Importance is, for a while, forgotten. Human distraction is a miraculous thing. And it is inevitable. But my power will not be undermined, for my job has already been done. I have set the pursuit into motion, motivated a sequence of events that otherwise would have not occurred. That was because of me, and only me. No other has the power to motivate by merely existing.

But how do I exist? What am I? I know what I do, and I am good at it. But what am I to you – a piece of paper? A voice trapped in black ink? Or am I more than that now. I have started something, and now it won’t stop till the end. Maybe even after that, too. Once My purpose is served, I exist thereafter in the implications.

Because I am Important.
