After a valuable pin-up where I discussed my collection of narratives about objects, I decided I needed to clarify my direction within the project. Was I looking at 'real-life MacGuffins' now? I decided this term was self-contradictory: a MacGuffin exists in a fictional context, so non-fictional MacGuffins cannot exist. However, realistic scenarios can be used in a narrative to make fake real-life MacGuffins. Addressing this and other existing discrepancies in my project helped me to move forward with a new idea that I am excited to explore further.
I refined my definition of a MacGuffin: a fictional device introduced early on in a story that provides a motivation to drive the story forwards. It is usually overshadowed by the drama it induces.
The line of inquiry I want to follow next is whether I can focus attention on the MacGuffin instead of the narrative, but while the narrative still takes place.
